El Jardín de las Iguales
Every wine grows from the soil and El Jardin de Las Iguales’ is truly one of a kind. Known as “Las Iguales” by its previous owner, this vineyard is nestled in Sierra de Algairén, specifically in the winding Barrandijos Valley in Alpartir (Spain).
Fruit of chance, or rather of causation, a part of this vineyard was planted between 1898 and 1908. A single family, “Los Paseta”, have been the caregivers ever since. Furthermore, subsequent plots were later added between 1919 and 1929 – all preserved until being recently saved from the brink of extinction.
In 2016, Bodegas Frontonio had the privilege to acquire this piece of land and history. In Jardin de Las Iguales, decades of wisdom are accumulated in twisted, gnarly vines amongst recovering old terraces and crumbling stone walls.
Bringing back yesterday’s pride to this valley has been our obsession ever since: such a special place should have meant something else at that time. Dry stone walls almost disappeared were a reminder of the existence, in a different time, of more terraces which could be cultivated under vines.
We were able to see some photos of a North American flight (1943 and 1957) where, indeed, we confirmed that this unique place was a whole vineyard with micro-parcels.
Sometimes, time goes hand in hand with age until death inevitably comes. El Jardin de las Iguales could then just either get old and disappear or pull itself together and become an historical vine. The decades of wisdom accumulated in twisted plants with incredible shapes it is transmitted in its wines.
As a result, El Jardin de las Iguales wine channels the legacy of decades of wisdom accumulated in gnarly twisted plants with incredible shapes to your palate. It is time to rebuild its walls, replant their vineyards and bring back life to its soils. The best wines are the expression of origin, dreams, culture and art.
